Aisha's Journey

From out-of-school to top of her class.

Aisha was twelve years old when her family decided she would no longer attend school. With four younger siblings and a mother struggling with illness, Aisha was needed at home — to cook, to fetch water, to care for the little ones. School felt like a distant memory, a luxury her family could not afford.

When Nashen Care Foundation's community mapping team arrived in her neighbourhood in Karmo, Abuja, Aisha was identified as one of over forty out-of-school children in her immediate community. Volunteers spoke with her family, listened to their concerns, and explained the Foundation's bridge learning programme — a structured, flexible learning pathway designed to help children re-enter formal education at their appropriate level.

At first, Aisha's father was hesitant. "Education is good," he said, "but who will care for the children at home?" The Foundation worked with the family to find practical solutions, including linking them to a community support network that could assist during Aisha's school hours. Slowly, the hesitation gave way to hope.

Aisha joined the bridge learning classes and took to her studies with remarkable determination. Her teachers noted her sharp memory and her eagerness to help other students in the group. Within six months, she had covered material that would normally take a year, and was formally reintegrated into a public primary school.

By the end of her first full term back in school, Aisha ranked first in her class.

"I used to think school was not for me anymore. But they came to our house and told my parents that I could still go. Now I want to be a doctor."

— Aisha, age 13

Aisha's story is a reminder that the barriers keeping children out of school are rarely insurmountable — they simply need someone willing to show up and help a family find a way through. Nashen Care Foundation is committed to being that someone, one child at a time.
