Samuel's Smile

Overcoming health challenges with community support.

Samuel was eight months old when his mother, Grace, first noticed that something was wrong. He had stopped gaining weight. His energy was low, and he cried less than a healthy baby should. Worried but unsure where to turn, Grace had been relying on the advice of neighbours and traditional remedies — none of which were helping.

A Nashen Care Foundation postnatal outreach volunteer visiting their community identified Samuel during a routine home visit. He was showing clear signs of moderate acute malnutrition — a condition that, left unaddressed, can cause lifelong developmental harm or worse.

The Foundation immediately connected Grace with a health referral network and helped her access the nutritional support Samuel urgently needed. Foundation staff also sat with Grace to walk her through infant feeding practices, the importance of exclusive breastfeeding in the early months, and how to recognise warning signs early.

Over the following weeks, Samuel began to respond. His weight crept upward. His eyes grew brighter. By his tenth month, he was within a healthy range for his age — laughing, reaching for objects, and charming everyone around him with the wide, open smile that gave this story its name.

"I did not know what to do. I was scared. They came to my house and they helped me understand. Samuel is fine now. He is my joy."

— Grace, Samuel's mother

Samuel's recovery represents what becomes possible when communities have access to timely health education and a support system that treats mothers with dignity. He is one of hundreds of infants reached through Nashen Care Foundation's maternal and infant health programme — and his smile is proof that the work matters.
