Daniel's First Day
A school kit made all the difference.
For Daniel's mother, the arithmetic was simple and heartbreaking: school fees had been scraped together, a second-hand uniform found, and the nearby primary school had agreed to enrol her seven-year-old son. But there was nothing left over for books, a pencil, or a bag. Without those, she feared the teacher would send him home on the first day — and that Daniel would never want to try again.
It was a Nashen Care Foundation volunteer who heard about Daniel's situation through a community parent engagement session. The Foundation's annual school kit distribution programme was underway, and Daniel's name was added to the list.
On the morning before his first day of school, Foundation staff arrived at his home with a backpack containing two exercise books, a reading primer, coloured pencils, a pencil case, a ruler, and an eraser. His mother later described the look on Daniel's face as one she would never forget.
Daniel walked into school that Monday carrying his bag on both shoulders, clutching his new pencil in his hand. His teacher noted that he sat in the front row and answered every question she asked.
"He would not take the bag off his back the whole day. Even during lunch, he kept it on. He was so proud."
Daniel is now in his second term and consistently among the most engaged students in his class. His story is a reminder that sometimes the smallest things — a bag, a pencil, a book — are what stand between a child and their future. Nashen Care Foundation is committed to removing those barriers, one kit at a time.
